Press Release: Shelter Fundraiser Good for the Soul

LONDON, ON – The Women’s Community House Grand House Party fundraiser June 17 promises to be good for the soul – and for the R&B as well. This year’s Legends: The Best of Soul & R&B is the latest addition to the Grand House Party franchise popular for its communal vibe. Jean Meilleur and members of the Jeans ‘n Classics Band are accompanied on the Grand Theatre main stage by guest vocalists Neil Donell, Rique Franks, Katalin Kiss and Kathryn Rose for a 20-song set list that includes classics from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

“Soul R&B is such a broad category spanning decades so it was really hard to pick the all time best Soul R&B artists and Soul R&B artist groups,” says Pamela Coray, executive producer and Women’s Community House development manager. “It’s the 40th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going and it’s on the set list. I bought the album in 1971 and you know, the song’s lyrics are as true today as they were 27 years ago. This is going to be a memorable show that unites the performers and audience in rare ways.” Special guests in the audience include London legends of the era concert and music promoter Nick Panaseiko and hair wizard Willy Hancox who introduced London’s first unisex hair salon in 1971.

“The singers and everyone in the band looks forward to this event each year,” says Jean Meuiller. “This show is unlike any other – interactive. We reminisce about the era throughout the show with the audience and these little amusing and moving glimpses dotted between the songs really make the show special and fun. It’s 2 hours of entertainment with a capital E.”

Women’s Community House is Canada’s largest high security shelter for abused women and serves over 6,000 people from London, the region, the province and Canada. Tickets are $45 on sale at the Grand Theatre box office or online www.grandhouseparty.ca
