While the bulk of our operating expenditure is derived from municipal and provincial funding, the most critical portion comes from our community and people like you. Your time and donations are what help us to make ends meet. As woman abuse is everyone’s concern, we all pay for it through lost production, increased police and social service budgets or higher medical costs. Women’s Community House receives roughly 80 percent of its funding from the province and the municipality but financial donations from the community are vital to help ensure the doors to WCH always remain open and our services free-of-charge. We’re always in need of donations of money, goods and time to help women and their children live their lives free of violence.

The majority of threats that our victims must endure happen right where it hurts the most – in their own homes. WCH has endeavoured to create spaces that cannot replace the home but that attempt to provide some of the support and comfort a safe and healthy home should have. Through the acquisition of buildings and improvement of existing spaces, WCH has been able to house hundreds of women each year to provide a safe and secure living space for them and their children. All Women’s Community House locations are equipped with security cameras and systems to ensure the safety and confidentiality of residents and tenants. Staff are trained in safety planning and will assist in planning for individuals and families specific to their situation. Safety planning can be completed over the phone on the Abused Women’s Helpline or in person at either of the shelters. An assessment of safety needs can also be done with a Transitional Outreach Counsellor out in the community at a convenient, safe location.

Wraparound Care is a comprehensive, new approach to holistic problem-solving in health care and other social services. Essentially, it denotes a system of support from caregivers in both professional environments and within the community that work together to provide a foundation of support. In the past, victims of domestic abuse were forced into the system as a result of some traumatic incident and then released back into the very environment that threatened their safety. With Wraparound Care, pillars of support are established within the community, with family members, with outreach services and professional entities to ensure a safe and healthy transition back into their normal lives, or in an alternate scenario.

Two rolls of barbed wire, three 12-foot fences, 16 security cameras, three dead-bolting doors, one laughing little boy …

This is a tour of Women’s Community House in London, Ontario. It’s not a detention centre for society’s most dangerous but a haven for its most vulnerable — abused women and their children.

As Executive Director Kate Wiggins puts it, “We’re designed similar to jails. Only we’re trying to keep people out.”

What they’re trying to keep in is the laughter, hope and safety that abused women and children need to heal.

From the looks of things, they’re doing a good job.

Domestic abuse can make a woman feel alone, that she has no one to turn to. But at Women’s Community House — a full-service shelter — women become part of a supportive community that cares for them and their children.

Courtyards full of playground equipment and murals of rainbows surround each group of three apartments. Women and children have self-contained spaces, complete with bedrooms, small kitchens and living rooms. In addition to the private courtyards, there’s a large playground and outdoor space, where a basketball court and garden let the residents experience nature and community.

Restoring dignity to abused women and children guides the shelter’s work and mission. It means respecting people’s cultures, experiences and abilities. Right now, the shelter has three accessible units for people with a disability. They’re rarely empty. “It’s very hard to find safe, affordable accessible units,” says Wiggins. Women with a disability are one and a half to 10 times more likely to suffer domestic abuse.

Despite this statistic, there’s also a lot of hope. Along with the trauma and suffering, Women’s Community House sees its fair share of triumph and healing. “Oh yeah, absolutely,” says Wiggins. “We hear about that actually quite often. It’s the magic that happens here. We get letters. We get thank-you cards. We’ve got all sorts of lovely, lovely stories and lovely outcomes and we are absolutely necessary in many of these stories.”

Wiggins is the first to acknowledge that Women’s Community House couldn’t have achieved these results without the community and government’s help. “This is the first government that’s had a Domestic Violence Action Plan,” she says, “and we have made some strides. We’re not there yet, but certainly there is movement. And it is on the political agenda.”

Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services, is part of the reason domestic violence is on Ontario’s political radar. “Violence against women affects everyone,” says the minister, “male and female, parent and child, friend and neighbour. The whole community suffers when a woman is abused.” Her government has just made a major investment in Violence Against Women Services so that shelters like Women’s Community House can be here for Ontario’s women and children in need.

“If you don’t have a lot, you don’t have a lot of supports in your life,” says Wiggins. “Where are you gonna go? You’re gonna come here. Of course you’re gonna come here.”

Thank goodness for that.

London’s Royal LePage Triland participated in the Royal LePage National Garage Sale for Shelter for the first time this year. We were pleased to raise over $5,000 for our designated shelter charity, Women’s Community House. Nationally, Royal LePage offices raised over $420,000 at the sale! Locally, on May 14th, we used the parking lot of the London St. Thomas Association of REALTORS(LSTAR). Donations were collected for a couple of months before in anticipation of the garage sale. Our major partner, AMJ Campbell Atlas Van Lines, picked up donations for us, stored the goods, and delivered them to the site on sale day. It was an overwhelming success- we estimate over 1,000 people came through and took advantage of the bargains. Our committee members, Kelley McIntyre, Melanie Pearce, Matt Santigapita, Peter Hess and myself had plenty of help from other sales people at our office and it made for a great day for all! For more information on the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, please follow this link http://www.royallepage.ca/en/community/shelter-foundation/index.aspx. Women’s Community House is very grateful for the support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. Hats off to Royal LePage Triland for your amazing efforts and for the huge success of your first garage sale as part of the Royal LePage National Garage Sale for Shelter.
